Spencer Derek Obituary (2024)

Spencer Derek Hatfield of Yakima, Washington concluded his mortal journey on March 6, 2024, at the age of 20. He was born on September 9, 2003, in Athens, Ohio. He lived most of his life in Indiana, Pennsylvania and moved to Yakima in 2021. He is a graduate of West Valley High School (2022). Spencer served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was an active member of the Young Single Adult Branch of the Church in Yakima. Spencer was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a congenital heart defect. He had multiple open-heart surgeries by the age of four, along with other procedures and hospital stays. Spencer also suffered from a stroke at the age of four and had to relearn how to walk and use the left side of his body. Spencers resilience, toughness and determination were traits he exemplified throughout his life. He inspired so many people with his positive attitude and his joy of life. Spencer enjoyed being a YouTuber and producing content on his YouTube channel, PikaPizza15. He was a huge fan of the Marvel superheroes, especially Spiderman. To all who knew him, Spencer was a hero himself. In school, Spencer often participated in school plays and musicals and was inducted as a member of the International Thespian Society in 2021. In his first role he was cast as Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol. In several of the later productions he participated in, Spencer was given lines of comic relief, which fit him well. Whenever Spencer spoke in public, he wanted to entertain those listening. Spencer was also famous for his life-long love of cheese pizza, and he ate pizza most days of the week. Spencer brightened his familys home and continues to influence them to be better people. He is dearly loved and will be missed every day until we can meet him again. Spencer is survived by his parents, Derek and Danielle, his sister, Meagan (Tyler), and his three brothers, Ethan, Bryce and Tyler. He is also survived by his four grandparents, Ron and Linda Hatfield of Yakima, WA, and Phil and Kathy Grothaus of Salt Lake City, UT, 21 aunts and uncles, and 34 cousins. He was preceded in death by his cousin Mitchell. A visitation will be held at Shaw and Sons Funeral Home in Yakima on Monday, March 11 from 6-8pm. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (705 S. 38th Ave., Yakima). The service will be live-streamed through Zoom (link provided below). A viewing will start at 9:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those who would like to honor Spencer can donate to Ronald McDonald House Charities, which served Spencers family very well in his early life.
