Obituary of Derek Karel
Derek Allen Karel, age 50 of Selah, passed away unexpectedly June 18, 2018, after suffering a massive heart attack while playing soccer. He was surrounded by his family. Derek aka “Boner” was born January 11, 1968, in Yakima, WA. He lived in Selah a majority of his life, and after graduating from Selah High School in 1986, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and PROUDLY served his country for 4 years; there was no greater honor to him. While serving in the Marines, he received many honors and awards, including the Series Honor Man Award and the Navy and Marine Corps achievement medal for outstanding leadership skills to the Corps and to his country, in addition to serving in Desert Storm. After returning home from the military in 1991, he attended Perry Tech where he received his degree in telecommunications. After schooling, he worked for Central Telecom before purchasing a small company, now known as e3 solutions, that he built from the ground up and has become a thriving, successful business to this day. Derek was extremely passionate about the work that his company did and valued his employees like they were family. His pride and joy, Olivia Renee Karel, was born to Derek and Chandra in 2004. Derek and Olivia had a very special relationship and loved traveling and spending time together and he was beyond proud. He was “that” dad that would show a perfect stranger a picture of his daughter just so they could see how beautiful she was. Derek had many passions and hobbies, including riding his Harley, cruising in his Chevelle, hiking, climbing, hunting, fishing, bike riding, traveling, goofing around, and one of his biggest accomplishments recently was summiting Mt. Rainier with his girlfriend Hanna, in July, 2017. Derek and Hanna began talking in 2012, and after many, many months of persistence and stalking, Derek won her over. They were a match made in heaven and truly loved every moment they spent together.
