Evelyn Darnall

Obituary of Evelyn Pearl Darnall

Evelyn Pearl Pedersen Darnall formerly of Cheyenne Wells and most recently of Cowiche, Washington died January 31st in her home.

Evelyn was born 5 miles east of Cheyenne Wells on September 6, 1925 the oldest child of Carl and Odessa Pedersen.  In 1942 the family moved to a farm 2 miles south of Arapahoe. Evelyn was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Grace Lutheran in Cheyenne Wells and later joined Bethlehem Lutheran of Yakima, Washington.

After graduating in 1944 from Arapahoe High School, she went to Garden City, Kansas and worked as a waitress.  She returned to Arapahoe where she met Marvin Darnall.  On March 2, 1946 they were married and began their life in Cheyenne Wells.  They were blessed with 3 children, David, Larry, and Ella Mae.  Their first home was a basement house.  When a rattlesnake crawled into a window well, through the window and buzzed at Evelyn, they moved next door.  It was several years later when they were able to put running water in the house. Evelyn was known for keeping a very clean house and more than one person commented that you could eat off her floor.  Being the wife of a farmer and rancher, Evelyn worked very hard her whole life.  Besides keeping a pen of chickens, Evelyn often took a hot meal she had cooked to the field for Marvin, her sons and maybe a hired hand.  Evelyn was a great cook and baker.  Her grandchildren loved her rolls and pies and cookies.  Her 11 grandchildren were a great joy in her life.  After her children grew and moved away she took a job in the laundry at Sacred Heart Hospital of the Plains.

When Marvin became ill, they moved to Cowiche, Washington in 1990 to be near their son, purchasing a mobile home that was added to the property.

Evelyn, assisted by David and grandson Nathan, cared for Marvin until his death in January, 1993. She chose to remain in Washington, and enjoyed the fellowship at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the meeting of the “lunch group” after church at Yakima Memorial Hospital cafeteria.  Her family was always important to her as evidenced by the photos displayed in every room of her house.

Evelyn is survived by her children:  David (Dorothy) of Cowiche, Washington and their children Nathaniel, Johanna (Brian) McDougall, Sarah (Todd) Oja, Bethany (Robert) Zink, Timothy, Elisabeth, and Micah (Rachel); Larry (Linda) of Santa Clara, California and their children Sheri and Kevin (Shannon); Ella Mae (James) Weaver of Aurora, Colorado and their children Jacob (Jessi) and Lucas (Lauren).  Evelyn is also survived by 16 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, David Pedersen and Clarence Pedersen, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin, parents Carl and Odessa Pedersen and brother Herman Pedersen.
