Obituary of Mae Jean Carlson

Mae Jean Carlson was born on July 4, 1942 to Ada and Leon Marquardt in Morris, Minnesota.

After a five-year battle with Alzheimer's she passed peacefully at Cottage in the Meadow on February 21, 2019.

She was a class of one at the schoolhouse in Morris. In 1953 her family moved to Yakima where she attended school in the West Valley area. She then attended Yakima Valley Community College where she received her AA degree.

Mae’s first career lead her to be an old fashioned telephone operator where she excelled at and enjoyed very much.

In 1962 she married the love of her life Mel Carlson. The following year their one and only child Jodi Lynn was born. For Jodi’s first five years Mae was a stay at home mom. Mae then became a special education para educator at Apple Valley grade school where she taught for 24 years. Those who knew her will remember her for her exquisite style, whether she was going to the grocery store or attending a party.

After Mel and Mae retired they enjoyed traveling together. They went to Australia, London, Japan and Israel. In their travels across the United States they saw many of their family and friends.

Mae enjoyed entertaining, wearing hats, having tea parties, traveling and being an active part of her church community.

In 2003, Mae and Mel moved to Walnut Creek, California to be closer to their daughter and granddaughter Janine. Mae enjoyed spending time with Janine, teaching her how to bake, cook and be fashionable. She loved taking Janine to Nordstrom, and getting mani-pedis together. She was the light of her life.

Mae is survived by her husband of 56 years Mel, her beloved daughter Jodi, her precious and only grandchild Janine and her two sisters. Arrangements are under the care of Shaw and Sons.
